Alexandra Chorobik

Alexandra Chorobik (nee Holuj), born May 1, 1931, died peacefully in her sleep January 15, 2025 in her home in West Chicago, IL. She was 93 years old. She is preceded in death by her husband, Josef, and sons Chet and John.

She was born in Hucisko, Poland, a small village outside of Krakow. One of seven children, five sisters and a brother, she was known from a young age for her talent at the crafting arts—knitting in particular. She often told stories of knitting sweaters for the nuns at school, and spinning her own yarn on a silver spinning wheel gifted to her by her sister. She married her husband on November 17, 1951, and together they started their family in Poland. In 1962, Joe moved to West Chicago, IL, and Alexandra soon joined him with their three children, Chet, Anna, and John.

Alexandra and Joe worked hard to make a life for their children in America, with Joe taking a position at General Mills, and Alexandra working for AT&T in the cafeteria, before moving to the assembly line building landline telephones. They even supplied cucumbers to the local pickle factory for a time.

At home, she was known for her sense of humor as well as her penchant for hard work, particularly with her garden. She could grow endless amounts of tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, strawberries, sweet peas, cucumbers, pumpkins, and more in one growing season. Her hands were deft and nimble enough to crochet lace, and strong enough to crack an apple open with her bare hands.

She was also known by her family and friends as an amazing cook—none of her family have yet to find anyone who makes pierogi as delicious as hers. Her house was always filled with the sound of laughter and the warmth of a home-cooked meal (and if you were too full to eat, you never told her that). Whenever you visited, you almost always left with leftovers and a jar of pickles, or a pair of newly knit socks. For every holiday, she and her daughter Anna would make a feast for the entire family, and we always felt love in every dish.

She is grieved by her daughter, Anna (Chris) Whelan; grandchildren, Dawn (Tim) McQuillan, Kristen (Tim) Paris, Eric (Karina) Chorobik, Lauren (Justin) Fritchen, Mark (Jenny) Chorobik, Dave Chorobik, Cara Whelan, and Kendra Whelan; and great grandchildren, Courtney, Caitlin, Mason, Branden, Kattie, Alex, Noah, and Everly.
