Anthony P. Giamberdino, Sr. , 88, passed away after losing the battle with Alzheimer’s on March 10, 2016 in Omaha, Nebraska where he was being cared for by his daughter, Julie. He is preceded by his parents, Antonio and Annamaria Giamberardino, who came to the USA from Italy in 1907. After arriving at Ellis Island, they settled in Chicago, IL. There they had six children, Tony being the sixth. His five siblings, Dora (John Liberatore, deceased), Inez (Howard Brown), Gerald (Rose, deceased), Quinten (Ann, deceased) and Anello (Eileen) have passed.
In his youth, Tony’s love for boxing brought him into the ring. He was affectionately called “Champie.”
From 1950 and 1952, Tony served in the U.S. Army and was stationed on Okinawa Island in Japan. There, he was able to entertain while singing with the army band.
He spent his entire life singing and performing professionally at various Chicago night clubs, radio and other venues. He met his future wife, Renee, when they were paired for a duet at the Chicago Conservatory of Music.
On November 20, 1954, Tony married Renee H. Bickerton, who passed away on March 16, 1987. They are survived by their three children and their spouses, Julie Kaminski (Scott), Tina Giamberdino and Anthony Giamberdino, Jr (Donna). There are ten grandchildren plus five spouses, and six great-grandchildren.
Tony is also survived by Julie (Dickey) Heuer, his long-time companion of 28 years.
Tony, who was loved by family and friends, will truly be missed by all. He will be remembered for his beautiful baritone versions of pop tunes and love ballads, his great sense of humor, his great love for his family and for the Chicago sports teams.
Visitation will be held on Monday, March 14, 2016 from 3 to 8 p.m. at Norris-Segert Funeral Home & Cremation Services , 132 Fremont St. (one block north of Washington St. and Main) West Chicago. Prayers Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at 9:30 a.m. from the funeral home to St. Mary’s Church , 164 N. Oakwood, West Chicago. Mass 10 a.m. Interment Assumption Cemetery in Wheaton.
