Colleen Westrom

Colleen Ann Westrom , age 80, passed away on November 18, 2020. She was born on January 13, 1940 in Chicago, IL to Christopher J. Salmon Sr. and Stephany A. Salmon.  Colleen’s first job was working in the line of business at the Prudential building, downtown Chicago. In 1961 at age 21, her parents would move her and her brother, Christopher or “Kit” out west to a little town called West Chicago. She soon met her husband, James W. Westrom, who worked at the Shoe Tree in town.  They married on September 30, 1962 and bought a little white house on Williams Rd. in West Chicago, where they had 3 girls. In 1978, Colleen worked at Kane County for many years, after which she became a title searcher in the same county. In 1989, Colleen attained her Certificate as a Library Technician where she would then work for Warrenville Library in Warrenville, IL.  Her final job landed her at Laidlaw Transit where she would retire in 2001.

Another facet of Colleen’s career included being an election judge. She served as an election judge at First Congregational Church in West Chicago for countless years. She took great pride in this task and enjoyed greeting the local people as they came to do their civic duty, as a United States citizen.

One of Colleen’s favorite things to do was to visit Lake Michigan. She loved sitting on the beach and watching the sunset, as she took her 3 daughters to Michigan for summer vacations every year. She loved decorating the house for the holidays and the different seasons.  Colleen was a walking encyclopedia, she was extremely knowledgeable and her memory was phenomenal. Colleen enjoyed following and discussing politics, and reading about history of all sorts.  One of her hobbies was learning about astrology. However, the thing Colleen loved the most was spending time with her 3 girls, all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Colleen is survived by her children, Eileen (Kevin) Herrick, Lauren (Scott) Fank and Allison (Gentry) Howard; grandchildren, Cindy (Dennis) Janek, Samantha, Bryan (Deanna Grant) Fank, Stephanie, Collin, Molly, Autumn, Jeremy, Grant and Jack; great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Charlotte, Nora, Jacob and Dominik.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Christopher J. Salmon Sr., Stephany A. Salmon; brother, Christopher J. Salmon Jr.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 25, 2020 from 11:30 a.m. until time of funeral service at 1:30 p.m. at Norris-Segert Funeral Home & Cremation Services , 132 Fremont St. (one block north of Washington St. and Main), West Chicago. Entombment will follow at Assumption Cemetery in Wheaton.
