Edward Schuett

October 17, 1919 — March 18, 2017

Edward Charles Schuett , a long-time resident of West Chicago, IL, and Sandwich, IL, died peacefully on Saturday morning, March 18, 2017, at Rosewood Care Center, St. Charles, IL.

Born October 17, 1919, Ed lived within a block of his birthplace on Pomeroy St. in West Chicago for over 65 years.  He graduated from West Chicago High School in 1937.  Ed proudly served his country during WWII as an Army Air Force mechanic working on B-17 and B-29 bombers.

With his father and brother he owned and operated South Side Garage on Joliet St. in West Chicago.  Ed also owned and operated Eddie’s Coach Service, providing transportation for the West Chicago school districts.  In 1972, after 25 years of owning and driving school buses, Ed was presented the national “Golden Merit Award,” a coveted recognition awarded by the National Association of School Bus Contract-Operators from the State of Illinois.

Ed served his community for many years as an alderman and as a member of American Legion Post 300 in West Chicago.  He served DuPage County as a bailiff in Wheaton, IL.  He and his wife and children faithfully attended Lutheran churches.  Ed was known for his friendly, outgoing personality, and would always be willing to help others.  He never forgot a face and people enjoyed being with him.

Ed and his wife moved to Lake Holiday, Sandwich, IL, in 1985.  He continued his civic involvement as a member of the Somonauk Lions’ Club, serving as treasurer and earning the Lion-of-the-Year award in 1993.   He also drove buses for Somonauk, IL, schools. Obviously, Ed loved to drive.  He took his family on many summer vacations, travelling as far west as Washington State, as far east as Maine, and as far north as Ontario, Canada.

Ed was a great fan of the Chicago Cubs and was thrilled to be able to witness the Cubs win the 2016 World Series.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, William Emil and Ellen (Bahnfleth) Schuett, and by his brother, William Alvin Schuett; his nephews, Mark Kautz, Rod Schuett, and Mike and John Ward.  He is survived by his wife of almost 71 years, LaVergne (Andersen) Schuett; one son, Dennis (Margie) Schuett; three daughters, Marlen Schuett, Lori (Terry) Rueffer, and Linda Schuett; two granddaughters, Michelle Rueffer Bond and Claire (Isaac) Schoepp; two step-grandchildren, Michael (Estelle) Nolan and Christine (Eric) Baldridge; one great-grandson, Riker William Bond; six step-great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Alexis, and Ryan Nolan, and Kyla, Grant, and Dean Baldridge; two sisters, Eileen Ward and Lorraine Kautz; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 23, 2017 from 9 a.m. until time of  funeral services at 12:00 p.m. at Norris-Segert Funeral Home & Cremation Services (one block north of Washington St. and Main), 132 Fremont St., West Chicago. Burial will follow at Glen Oak Cemetery in West Chicago. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Ed’s memory may be made to Somonauk Lions Club , P.O. Box 214, Somonauk, IL 60552.
