Richard Raymond Harwood , age 86, longtime resident of High Lake, passed away October 28, 2014. He was born on December 27, 1927 in Chicago to Elmer and Caroline (Berezny) Harwood. He graduated from Passionist Prep in St. Paul, Kansas in 1945. Rich was united in marriage to Barbara (Campbell) from 1955 to 1977 and Harriet (Pauhl) from 1989-1998. Rich was a Korean War US Army Veteran and member of American Legion Post 76 Wheaton-Carol Stream. He was an active member of St. John the Baptist Parish since 1955, 4th Degree member of Fr. Michael J. McGivney Council 8002, Eucharistic minister volunteer at Central DuPage Hospital over 25 years, and minister of care volunteer over 35 years at DuPage Convalescent Center. Rich was Council Knight of the year in 1995-1996, Assembly Knight of the year 1996-1997, and received the Charles P. Faust Award in 1999-2000 Dr. Dooley Assembly.
He is survived by his children, Sue Anne Harwood of Cedar Rapids, IA and Richard T. Harwood of West Chicago; grandchildren, Tim and Thomas; former daughter-in-law Robin; sisters, Marie (Lee) LeGros and Ruth Ann (Ralph) Petersen; brother, Albert Harwood; and nieces, nephews relatives and many special friends.
Rich was preceded in death by his wives, Barbara and Harriet; son, Gilbert Peter; grandson, Scotty; and brother, William.
Visitation Friday, October 31, 2014 from 4 to 9 pm at Norris-Walen-Segert Funeral Home, 132 Fremont Street (1 block north of Washington & Main) West Chicago. Rich will lie-in-state on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at St. John the Baptist Church, 0S233 Church St., Winfield from 10:30 am until time of Mass at 11:00 am. Interment Calvary Cemetery in West Chicago.
